Hi Ramesh, If petrol consumption is your main priority, and you always get stuck in KL traffic jams, then getting a 1.6 makes sense. But if you travel in highways a lot, getting a 1.8 might be a better idea, since the car is rather heavy. All said, it's better to test drive the car yourself to know the feel. You might feel the car rather sluggish on the 1.6 To give you an idea, I get almost 450 km for every RM 65 of petrol (RON 95, RM1.80 per litre). Go to my blog to read more.

I’m looking to buy a 2nd altis. Is it advisable to take a 1.6 or 1.8. Is the petrol consumption differ much.

Hi there,

Timing chains on the Altis does not need to be changed. Even if it needs to be changed, it is only after a very long period of time, about 300,000 to 400,000 km. I doubt there is any problem with it, unless the car had a major accident before.

However the timing chain TENSIONER and the timing chain GUIDE is the one that needs to be inspected every 50,000 km or so. Or maybe the mechanic is talking about the other belt that powers the fan and the air-cond? The call it the serpentine belt or the v-belt. If I were you, I’d make an appointment with the Service Centre to have them checked and serviced. A stitch in time saves nine!

Hi Jacky,

we’ve got of the same car model but i could hear an unusual sound at low rpm and i was told it might be the timing chain. Is it advisable to change the timing chain?

Surprising me..since when he interested become a photographer ? Hi Roy,

I loved the Altis very much. RM86K for a 2-year car is quite okay. Furthermore the mileage seem very low. I would recommend it anytime.
